Short Stories Keep Me Going
I have a lot of respect for short stories and writers who do them well. I think short stories have the potential to take us places that novels can’t. There is more ground for successful experimentation that would get watered down if it were to be stretched into novel length. Many short story ideas would and do make great novels, but there are great short stories that work precisely because they are no longer than they are.
As a writer of short stories and an author that streams some of my short story writing, I think this is where my creativity is really tested and where I get the greatest reward for trying something new. That reward is largely intrinsic. The audience responds and I do make money from selling short stories and publishing collections. The real reward is closing out a short story after a few hours work and realizing that it works. I was able to make it happen.
I can’t foresee myself ever growing tired of writing short stories or of reading them from writers at all levels of talent and experience.
