New Normal
I joke with people that other than my kidneys, my heart, and my brain, I’m doing fine. I suppose my skin, my teeth, and my eyes could use some work too, but I’ll have to get to that stuff later. Last year, I had to cancel a number of trips, every trip we had planned, in fact. I’m immuno-suppressed because I’m a kidney transplant patient and Covid took a jump last summer. This year, I have a convention planned at the beginning of April and other trips after that. At that point, it will have been two-and-a-half years since the last convention or trip I’ve taken. Covid isn’t over and I still have to be careful, but I’m hoping I can make some of these trips. Because of my cardiac rehab schedule, I might have to cancel a big trip to Texas I have planned for the end of April/ beginning of May. We’ll see.
I’m not sure what people mean when they talk about the “new normal”. Whether it is with the pandemic, politics, or anything else, it means things are going to change in some way, but that’s just a description of life really. I don’t think people who use that phrase know what it means either. They think things are changing and they’re scared, but they don’t know what the future really holds. None of us do.
I find myself constantly reminded that more time is never guaranteed for me. I still intend to be careful, but I plan to see the people who mean something to me again this year. I’m going to do everything I can to make that happen because there are no guarantees. Eventually, for all of us, the new normal will be a world without us. I intend to do something with the time I have.
